Trying out my new Nikkor Z 24-200/4-6.3 VR

So, this is the final lens for restarting. I wanted to have a general purpose, sufficiantly sensitive wide range zoom that should be quick enough for street photography. Here are some pictures from my first two walks with it.

Checking the dynamic range. Left: Original – Right: slightly edited RAW processing

It was a beautiful day, so I wanted to have a subject with both deep shadow and very light areas. This perspective of the stairs in front of the City Hall provided both of them, with risk for overexposure of the reflection on the water.

When looking for a suitable situation for street photography, I noticed the effect of the sun reflected from the windows in the building to my right.

Street photography with reflected sunlight

The way this reflected light highlights the four persons front and center gives it an unrealistic look, almost as if (poorly) generated by AI.

Further on to a park, I wanted to check how the lens would perform with a shallow depth of field, given that its f/4-6.3 is not very open. As you can see, it performs as can be expected, with not very much of a bokeh effect. Of course if you place your subject close and the background father away, a good bokeh could be achieved.

Checking the bokeh and shallow depth of field.

For this picture I zoomed in quite a lot with 175mm. This together with the widest aperture of f/6.3 lead to some vignetting. Usually this can easily addressed in post processing, but here I decided to keep it. Lets look at the sharpness. Below you find a 1:1 crop of the mast together with the moss on the sails and some threads spider silk. I am quite satisfied with this performance at the price range of this lens.

100% crop 1:1 where 1 pixel of the image matches 1 pixel on the sensor.

Finally a quick opportunity to check the sharpness of the lens with widest aperture. First the total of the duck in the fountain and then a close crop at 100% again. As you can see ith the drops and the feathers, the sharpness is not the best possible, but give that it was shot at 200mm, f/6.3 and ISO 1800, I am more then satisfied with the performance of this lens at this price point.
