Where I am coming from – Previous Gear

I photographed a lot during the 90’s and 00’s. At that time I was very much into Nikon and loved their build quality and image rendition as well as their natural color reproduction when I went digital.

My last analog was the Nikon F70. I used it extensively for a project of nighttime images and loved its ease of use. When I went digital, I settled for the D70 and felt right at home. The color renditions were perfect for my use at that time.

My standard setup of lenses consisted of an AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED as the standard workhorse. It suited my style of seeing the world quite well. My favorite was an AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8. It was briliant in low light and the images were so crisp. When traveling, my standard was a Tamron LD 28-200 mm 1:3.8-5.8. It was small, light and got the job done.

I need to remember this, when choosing new gear. What was it that I used, why did I love it and why did I agree on compromises as with the Tamron.

Film I liked

When working analogue, I had my favorite film, of course. My standard was the ISO100 Kodakchrome. I liked their neutral colors so much better than e.g. Fujifilm’s. For nighttime or low light photography I choose the ISO800 Fuji instead. In the lack of light of the night, I think I wanted the available colors to have more pop.

I also did quite some B/W shooting and there I resorted mainly to the ISO100 Agfa.

How should this information and memory serve me when selecting a new camera? I guess I want to get something with a neutral imaging and high dynamic range. Definetly interchangeable lenses. Let’ see, where this reasoning takes me.
